Bomb scare in Imo

Bomb scare in Imo
•Okorocha’s aides whisked him away from ‘bomb’ scene
From GEORGE ONYEJIUWA, Owerri
There was a stampede on Friday evening at the Ahajioku Convention Centre, Owerri, Imo State capital as Governor Rochas Okorocha was suddenly whisked away by security aides from the convention centre as they apparently mistook an abandoned bag at the centre fore a bomb.
A source, who was at the centre, told Saturday Sun that the governor who was holding a meeting of political stakeholders, was interrupted by his security aides, who broke protocol to alert him of imminent danger.
The source said that the attitude of the security aides, which provoked panic among the audience caused a stampede, which left several people wounded as they scampered for safety.
According to the source, who does not want his name in print, stated:“Suddenly the security men started running helter skelter and cordoned off the podium to shield the governor, so everybody started running in all direction and some of the people were trampled upon.
“But after the initial pandemonium, it was discovered that the course of the stampede was an empty bag that was abandoned on the gallery”.
Meanwhile, bomb disposal unit attached to the Government House, who arrived the scene 45 minutes later confirmed that the content of the abandoned bag was books and other personal effects, which was probably forgotten by the owner.
One of the bomb disposal experts, who disclosed that they arrived late at the scene because they had no operational vehicle and functional equipment, blamed the governor’s security details for stampeding the audience.
