Authorities in New York City are offering up to $100,000 for information leading to the arrest of 31-year-old Isaac Don Burks, aka Stephawn Burks, Stefan Levine, Isaac Levine, Stefan Burks, and Walter Brooks.
Burks is described as an African-American male, medium brown skin, six feet two inches tall, weighing 185 pounds.
According to New York City Health Department spokesperson Kate Caraway, this is the first time a HIV infected individual has spread HIV to so many victims.
“We want to make sure that anyone who may have injected drugs with, who may have had s*x with him, does come forward and get tested,” she Caraway. “We want to make sure that they’re not spreading the virus to anyone else.”

India Plans To Put Monkeys On Birth Control

A rising population of menacing monkeys has become quite the problem for civilians in major cities throughout India, and the conflict has gotten so out of hand that government wildlife officials are looking into putting the primates on the pill, the Telegraph reports.
As the forested areas of the country rapidly disappear due to urbanization, the red-bottomed rhesus macaques (or Bhandar monkey) is forced to rampage cities in search of food, the report notes.
“People can’t come out of their houses, they’re taking clothes, biting people,” professor P.C. Tyagi of the Wildlife Institute of India told the Telegraph of the efforts to curb the growing monkey population. “One of the main advantages [of oral contraception] is that it is non-surgical. We’ll look at how it works in other countries, carry out a trial, then we’ll go ahead. If there are problems with the dosage, we’d need to work that out.”
The animals have been a problem in India for several years. In 2012, for example, the New York Times reported that “the monkey population of Delhi [had] grown so large and aggressive that overwhelmed city officials [had] petitioned India’s Supreme Court to relieve them of the task of monkey control.”
Although these types of monkeys excel in human-disturbed environments, their close proximity to bustling city life is likely the cause for the growing conflict between the primate and humans, according to the National Primate Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
In 2008, Hong Kong was experiencing a similar problem with aggressive monkeys and decided to take action on the growing population with birth control. In a four-year study of the contraceptive’s effects, the primates’ numbers dropped 15 percent, the Agence France-Presse reported.
Officials in Thailand began taking action against a growing monkey population by sterilizing a number of male macaques, Reuters reported in 2009. Vets told the outlet the decision was beneficial to monkeys as well as humans.
“There is not enough food or homes for monkeys,” veterinarian Juthamas Sumanam said at the time. “If their numbers increase, people will be in trouble as well as the monkeys.”

Suspected Ritualists Storm Ekiti Hospital At Midnight, Demand Day-Old Babies

Five gunmen, suspected to be ritualists on Sunday invaded the government hospital in Ado-Ekiti, demanding for new born babies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the gunmen who were said to be numbering about five, arrived at the hospital at about 1:00 a.m. demanding for a day old babies, and beating up staff who could not give satisfactory answer.
A senior health officer, who pleaded anonymity, said that the armed men invaded the hospital located along Irona area at about 1:00 a.m. and suddenly began molesting medical officials on night duty.
According to the officer, the invaders, who were fully armed, are rhetorically demanding for the whereabouts of a particular baby, said to have been delivered earlier in the day.
“They got more annoyed when they were told that no baby was available in the hospital as at the time they came, it angered then the more and they went berserk,’’ the officer said.
This development, NAN learnt angered the men who beat up the hospital staff and injured some of them.
“As a senior person on duty, I tried to convince them that all new born babies have been discharged from the centre in the last couple of days, but they refused to be convinced.

“This angered them the more and they descended on the staff  beating us, some of them were busy ransacking the place in search of babies,’’ the source said.
When contacted, the Chairman of Ado Local Government, Mr Tope Olanipekun confirmed the incident, saying “this is a new twist to crime in the area’’.
Olanipekun, who claimed to have visited the hospital to see things for himself, described the incident as “highest point of callousness on the part of the perpetrators”.
“As I speak, the incident actually happened and I want to assure you that we are taking step to forestall a recurrence.’’
The chairman said that he had already ordered that night duty be suspended in all the hospitals in the council, pending when tight security measures, which would include fencing of all health centres be taken.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Victor Babayemi, ASP, who was surprised at the development, however said the incident was yet to be reported to the police command. (NAN)

The All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate, Senator Chris Ngige has said he will not accept any result from Idemili North council area of the state following what he termed election irregularities.
He alleged that violence and other electoral malpractices marred yesterday’s governorship election in Idemili North and South believed to be his stronghold.
He said; “Well the process here is okay (Alo), there are some challenges in my ward and I have reports from other centres but the most worrisome is from Idemili North where as at 1:30 p.m. voting materials were yet to arrive in so many places and even when they started bringing the materials around 2p.m, there were no result sheets and in some places hoodlums and thugs took the result sheets and in other places, INEC hid the result sheets.
“Idemili North has over 180, 000 voters, the highest in the whole state, is about three local government areas in one, Obosi alone has 47, 000 registered voters while some local governments have 47, 000, so Obosi and its confluent town or settlements of Enekwesumpu, Odume, Awada, Ugwuagba can, equate a local government population, so nothing has happened there and I’m told that some people were voting in one hotel in Obosi, we are yet to see that, we are yet to see the result but I am not happy, it is hope betrayed, I had hoped that this election will be smooth in all aspects so that we will be able to congratulate whoever is the winner and as you can see, they have targeted my area of strength, Idemili North, they have starved them of materials, people have gone home having stayed about eight hours. Some other areas like Abatete and places like Ogidi they visited with violence and snatched result sheets and ballot boxes.
“They transposed some materials to other places, even some materials for Oraukwu were seen at Nkpor but these are deliberate to cause confusion and they have succeeded in causing confusion, if you go to Awka, the areas of the GRA, wards 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, they starved them of materials because they have looked at the voting pattern, Ngige has been winning there anytime, so they attacked them and starved them of materials, the same goes for Idemili South, some names are not in the voters’ registers anymore even though the voters registers were given two weeks to the election and their names were there, so it is worrisome but it makes some of us to say that Nigeria still has a long way to go.
“We will not accept any result that comes out of Idemili North now, it is now suspect, we cannot accept any result that comes from Idemili North, even if I win, how can I win, they are not conducting any election and we are asking for bye-election tomorrow, let us do bye-election. Awka South, the areas that didn’t vote should vote, they called me that they have waited for eight hours, so this is the position and we don’t know. From the local governments, I learnt that the materials came late and some parts of Ogbaru, we also heard that in Nnewi South, our agents were chased away. There is no way the election result will be the true reflection of the voters’ wishes and we saw this coming and we made report to the INEC chairman and we hold him by his words.”

PDP candidate, family disenfranchised

Says, ‘I’ll win in spite of all odds’
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Comrade Tony Nwoye and family, including his father were yesterday disenfranchised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as their names were missing in the voters’ register at his Ofia Nta Ward I, Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government.
Nwoye who had earlier visited the polling unit at 8am for accreditation and stayed for over one hour without seeing the electoral officers, left and returned hours later only to be told that his name was not there and that they would do something about it.
But when at about 3pm he returned and went through the register himself he was shocked that out of about 403 persons that were registered and voted there in 2011 during the National Assembly election, which he contested and was declared elect by the Court of Appeal, only about 94 names were in the register INEC brought yesterday for the election.
Addressing newsmen after going through the register, Nwoye said it was unfortunate that the incumbent government had continued to connive with INEC to rig governorship elections in the state by ensuring that they disenfranchise people at the opponents’ strongholds, noting that was the same pattern used to rig in Governor Obi in 2010.
He said, “I am a little bit disappointed, I was here as early as 8am to get accredited. I didn’t see anybody. I went around the polling booths in my town, most of the polling booths I went to I saw crowds, some 800, some over a thousand people. They came out in thousands to be accredited, they did not see any INEC officials and materials. It took the intervention of the federal INEC Commissioner, Amb. Lawrence Nwurukwu for them to come to our polling booths between 10.30 and 11 am, yet when I came they weren’t ready and I had to go and come back again.
“Now that I came I did not see my name, my father who registered here did not see his name, my uncle, my twin brother, and others, most of us did not see our names. They said I should go. They will sort it out. I came back again they had not sorted it out. It is shocking. I was elected in the same place, I voted here in 2011and now that register that has more than 450 close to 500 registered voters does not have up to 100 registered voters now. What happened? INEC went and removed them overnight, it is not right.
“This is the only election that is being conducted today in the whole country today, so in 2015 when Jega will be conducting election simultaneously in the whole country, how can he cope? And most importantly we got report in Ogidi, Obosi and even in Agulu where Governor Obi comes from that the governor hijacked materials and used security to chase people away, the transitional chairman under Mr. Peter Obi government has chased people away, using police to write result, so it is not good.
“If we should lose, we want to be bad losers not for them to rig, but upon the whole irregularities, upon the whole malpractices, we are still confident that we are going to still win because the youths of Anambra are resisting them everywhere. They are resisting Peter Obi and INEC everywhere. We strongly believe that there is a strong connivance between INEC and Obi, even in Dr. Ngige’s town they don’t want people to vote just as they don’t want people to vote in my town.
Obosi where my wife comes from has more than 57,000 registered voters. Up till now they have not allowed them to vote. It’s not good for democracy.”
On his next line of action he said, “We are still expecting result and as the results are coming by we will know the direction to follow but upon all the malpractices we are still confident that we are going to win.”

Rights Group Condemns Racist Attacks On Nigerians In India

A human rights group, Youth and Conflict Resolution Initiatives, YCRI, has condemned what it termed “the unprovoked, racist and murderous attacks against Nigerians in India.”
In a release signed by its Director of International Relations, Comrade Efemena Agadama, YCRI described as a shame the alleged role of the Indian police and government officials in the saga and demanded for the immediate release of 51 Nigerians arrested while protesting against the brutal murder of their fellow country man.
“The video footage currently circulating on Youtube where a Nigerian is brutally beaten with dangerous sticks, blood dripping from his head, in the presence of the Indian Police, by an angry mob and the statement credited to Subhash Phaldesai, BJP MLA from Sanguem allegedly describing Nigerians as wild animals pumped up with drugs,  is a shame to the Indian Police and government.

“Nigerians do not deserve to be treated or described as wild animals, cancer, Negroes or aggressive people. It is against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and betrayal of the bilateral relations between Nigeria and India.”
The group however commended the quick response of the Nigerian High Commission in India on the issue, and therefore called on the federal government, the National Assembly and the Nigeria Police to use all diplomatic means to address the situation to protect Nigerians from the ongoing racist attacks on them.
“This struggle to protect Nigerians in India should not be left just for the Nigerian High Commission in India. It should be a collective effort. We therefore, commend the quick response of the Nigerian High Commission there; that is how a Nigerian mission should react, depicting a country that will stand for its citizens in the hour of distress. There are facts that more harm would have been done without the laudable and quick response of the Nigerian mission in India.”

N5bn Missing From The Excess Crude Account – Amaechi

Rivers State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, is asking for explanations from relevant government agencies, after alleging the disappearance of $5 billion from the Excess Crude Account.
Speaking at a retreat organised by the NGF at Giginya Hotel, Sokoto and attended by many governors, Amaechi asked Nigerians to rise up and ask questions on how the nation’s resources are being managed by the NNPC and the Finance Ministry in a bid to prevent the Federal Government from shortchanging the other tiers of government in revenue allocation.
The NGF chairman said it was shocking to discover that the ECA, which had a balance of $9 billion in January, had inexplicably dwindled to $4 billion without explanation by the Federal Government.
“The Excess Crude Account in January was N9 billion. That account belongs to the federal, states and local governments. Today it is N4 billion. We don’t know who took the N5billion.
“Nigerians need to ask where the money has gone and why their money is being used as private funds.”
Amaechi also condemned the Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s refusal to sign a loan agreement with the African Development Bank to free $200 million for the provision of water in Rivers State because of alleged disagreement between him and the President.
According to the governor, the ADB and the state government had already signed the appropriate documents for the loan only for Okonjo-Iweala to develop cold feet.
“The ADB and Rivers government met and negotiated and they agreed to give us a loan of $200 million to improve water supply in the state.
“We have all signed our own side of the loan agreement but the Finance Minister, who is highly recognised globally, has refused to sign the document to enable us to draw down the loan to provide water for the people of Rivers State on the allegation that Amaechi has some political disagreement with the President.”
Besides about 15 governors present at the retreat, the speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, National Chairman of the breakaway faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aka nPDP, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, former Kwara State governor, Dr Bukola Saraki, Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Uwais, also attended and spoke at the event hosted by the Sokoto State governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko.

Speaking at the retreat, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, lamented the imbalance inherent in the Nigerian presidential system, which has given too much powers to the centre at the expense of other tiers of government and weakened democracy and good governance.
Tambuwal said that the enormous powers vested on the Federal Government under the presidential system has turned the country into a unitary system, thereby deleting the essence of federalism.
“Nigerian’s federalism is peculiar as no other presidential system in the world has practised the type that is being run by Nigeria. It is unfortunate that the basic tenets of federalism, which we copied from the United States, are not being implemented in Nigeria.”
He said the centre should give certain functions to the states and local governments as is the case in the presidential system operated by many countries around the world.
Also speaking, Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, said the unitary system of government in Nigeria had robbed Nigerians of their creativity and innovations. He therefore called for a change of the system so as to deepen democracy and good governance.
On his part, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State called for a system of government that promotes good governance, merit and competition and eliminate corruption and underdevelopment.
The host governor, Wamakko, explained that the meeting was to examine the myriad of challenges facing the nation and to explore solutions to them in the interest of the people.
Wamakko said that it was time for Nigerians to move above political sentiments and face the real challenges facing the nation.
Other governors present at the retreat were those of Zamfara, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Borno, Niger, Jigawa, Osun, Oyo, Kano and Kwara.

Jonathan, Oshiomhole Hail World Cup-bound Eagles

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday congratulated the Super Eagles on their 2-0 victory over Ethiopia in the final rounds of 2014 FIFA World club qualifiers, which earned Nigeria a slot at the 2014 World Cup Finals in Brazil.
A statement from the presidency praised the doggedness of the Super Eagles in ensuring victory, yesterday, at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar.
“President Jonathan joins other proud and happy Nigerians in applauding the Super Eagles’ dogged and determined performance against the Ethiopians over the two legs of the final qualifying round which ensured away and home victories, and also ensured that Nigeria will be at the World Cup Finals for the fifth time,” the statement said.

“As the team and its handlers bask in the glory of being the first African country to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Jonathan urges them to rededicate themselves to excelling on the global stage and reaching for heights never previously attained by the country at the World Cup Finals.”
Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole also congratulated the Eagles saying they have done Nigeria and have shown they are indeed champions of Africa, by the qualification.
“The Super Eagles have shown that they are indeed the Champions of Africa by emerging the first country from the continent to qualify for the World cup, joining the ranks of other great football nations like Germany, Netherlands, Spain and England, among others, who have already qualified,” a Government House statement said.

Three Arrested As Soldiers, Kelvin’s Boys Battle In Kokori

Soldiers have recovered arms and ammunition from alleged members of the Liberation Movement of Urhobo People, LIMUP, a militant group formed by suspected Delta State kidnap kingpin, Kelvin Oniarah, who is presently in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, after a gun battle in Kokori, Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Acting on a tip-off, the soldiers reportedly made the recovery after the gunfight in one of the kidnap kingpin’s men’s hideouts, an uncompleted building in Kokori. Three suspects, including a classmate of Kelvin, were said to have been arrested and are undergoing interrogation in connection with the arms.
In a related development, some suspected LIMUP members, on Tuesday, abducted a Kokori leader, identified as Chief Fred Enufo, and took him to their den at the outskirts of the town, where they gave the entire Kokori chiefs terms on repossession of a rifle lost by the group.

Spokesperson for the Joint Task Force, Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, told Sunday Vanguard, on Thursday, on phone, that one AK 47 rifle, three magazines and 86 rounds of 7.62 mm special were recovered after the shootout.
He said following a tip-off that some kidnappers and other hoodlums were converging at an uncompleted building in Kokori, soldiers went to the place to find out but were confronted by the hoodlums, who opened fire.
Nwachukwu confirmed that the soldiers returned fire, overpowered and arrested three of them, adding, “During interrogation, the suspects confessed to being in the Kelvin gang and one of them said he was a classmate to Kelvin. We are still investigating.”
The chief, kidnapped and later released by the gang, was accused of leading the Kokori Council of Chiefs on a self-seeking mission to Warri to apologize to the Ovie of Agbon kingdom, HRM Ogurimerime , Ukori I, over his plight. [Vanguard]

2015: EFCC storms Jigawa

• Whisks away Lamido’s sons, 18 other government officials

 Barely one week after the Directorate of State Security Service, SSS, arrested some top officials of seven different banks in the country, ostensibly as part of the alleged clampdown on the G-7 governors of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, officials of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday night, between the hours of 11 and 11.30pm, arrested the two sons of Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, Aminu and Mustapha Lamido.
This latest arrest is coming about one year after Lamido’s eldest son, Aminu, was arrested at the Kano International airport, on his way to Egypt, with his family, for medical attention, on the allegation that he failed to declare the $50, 000 in his possession. He was said to have declared only $10, 000, to the Nigerian Customs Service.
The arrest is also coming ahead of the meeting of the Governor Rotimi Ameachi-led Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, in Sokoto today (Saturday) in which, Governor Sule Lamido, is a leading member.
Before the governor’s two sons , Alhaji Aminu Sule Lamido and Alhaji Mustapha Sule Lamido were arrested Thursday night, Saturday Sun gathered authoritatively that the Jigawa State Accountant-General, Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Rector, Dutse Polytechnic and 15 other top government officials had been arrested by the EFCC, and have all been moved to Abuja. While Aminu is a Bayero University graduate of Mass Communication, Mustapha who is an alumnus of the University of Abuja is the district head of the Baimana village in Jigawa.
Besides, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, and the SSS, had sent their men to Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, to look into government books thoroughly, with a view to establishing any infraction that may have been committed by the state governor.  They are specifically to look into the State’s Pension Funds accounts and other government accounts, Saturday Sun, further learnt.
And the State governor, it was further gathered, had directed all the State officials, to give the security agencies, all and everything they asked for, to assist them in their investigations.
No statement has been issued from the EFCC, concerning these series of arrest. However, an impeccable source within the EFCC, confirmed the arrest to Saturday Sun.
Besides, Saturday Sun recalls that in the build up to the 2011 elections, when it was feared that Lamido was not likely to back President Jonathan’s candidature, EFCC men also stormed the State, to arrest top government officials for questioning. But two years after that arrest and subsequent release of the government officials, no one has been prosecuted; neither has the EFCC given any update on the arrest.
This is why political observers believe that this latest invasion by the EFCC too, may not be unconnected with 2015 and the current crisis within the PDP, where Lamido and six other of his colleagues have since been penciled down for “all manner assaults-psychological and otherwise” in a bid to force them to back down on their current struggle “to return PDP to the path of Rule of Law, Justice and fairness.”
Interestingly, on the night that his sons were arrested, Lamido, had in an interview aired on the Hausa Service of an Abuja-based Vision FM, alleged that a serving minister in Jonathan’s cabinet received a bribe of $250 million from an oil company, and that in spite of the fact that he (Lamido) informed President Jonathan about the fraud, the President refused to investigate the matter, adding that “he (minister) knows and I know, and I told the President.”
When Saturday Sun called him to react to the arrest of his sons, in the wee hours of yesterday, Lamido said:” yes, I am in Abuja. I just got a call that my sons have been picked up by the EFCC. But there is no cause for alarm.”
Saturday Sun recalls that Lamido, had in September, this year, while urging members of the Baraje-led faction of the PDP, to brace up for the challenges ahead, predicted that a day would come when the EFCC would come after them, in their struggle to “salvage the PDP and the country’s democracy.”

Boko Haram is holding a French priest who was kidnapped in northern Cameroon, a source in the banned Nigerian Islamist group said on Friday, rejecting claims of a rift among the insurgents.

“I can confirm that the French priest is in the hands of mujahideen (fighters) from Jamaat Ahl al-Sunna Li Da’wat al-Jihad, who carried out the operation that was co-ordinated with Ansaru,” he told AFP.
Boko Haram prefers to go by the Arabic name, which translates as “People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings and Jihad” (holy war).
Ansaru is an offshoot of the militant group and has previously claimed kidnappings of foreign nationals.
The United States on Wednesday listed both Boko Haram and Ansaru as terror groups, bowing to months of pressure to act after years of bloody violence in northeast and central Nigeria that has left thousands dead.
Hours after the declaration, heavily armed men abducted Roman Catholic priest Georges Vandenbeusch from his home near the town of Koza in northern Cameroon, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Nigerian border.
He was seized by about 15 people, who burst into his Nguetchewe parish base, according to the bishop of the Nanterre diocese near Paris, which has authority over the cleric.
The Boko Haram source, who did not want to be identified, declined also to say where the 42-year-old priest was being held, after the Cameroon authorities said they feared he had been taken across the border into Nigeria.
Speaking in Paris after talks with Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe, French President Francois Hollande said Vandenbeusch had “most likely” been taken to Nigeria.
“We are checking all the information that we can get,” he told reporters, adding that he would speak with his counterpart in Cameroon, Paul Biya, and vowing that France was doing “all it could to find… and free” the priest.
“The fight against terrorism is still our main concern and common purpose,” he added.
Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi described the kidnapping as “an extremely serious and horrible case, reflected the spread of hatred and violence in the region.”

The Boko Haram source promised to reveal more details about the kidnapping “at the appropriate time”.
But he added that claims of rifts within the ranks of the insurgent group, which has been linked to Al-Qaeda’s operations in north and western Africa, were exaggerated.
Boko Haram originally claimed to be fighting for the creation of an Islamic state in northern Nigeria and has made suicide bombing and gun attacks its trademark.
Ansaru has been linked to at least three hostage-takings of foreigners since 2011 and has mentioned French intervention in Mali and European nations’ “atrocities done to the religion of Allah” when claiming kidnappings.
“There is a deliberate attempt by the enemies of Islam to portray Jamaat Ahl al-Sunna Li Da’wat al-Jihad as sharply divided,” the source said.
“What they don’t know or ignore is that the two groups work closely together and most of the operations by the mujahideen are jointly carried out by the mujahideen from both sides.”
AFP tried to verify the Boko Haram claim from other sources but there was no immediate information available from the authorities.
The kidnapping of Vandenbeusch, who had been working in the area for two years and had ignored French government warnings about the dangers of staying in the region, brings to eight the total number of French hostages held worldwide.
Four others are being held in Syria, another in Nigeria and two in the Sahel region on the southern fringes of the Sahara desert.
In February, a Frenchman employed by the gas group Suez in Yaounde was kidnapped with his wife, their four children and his brother while visiting a national park near the Nigerian border.
They were then taken across the notoriously porous frontier. The kidnapping was later claimed by Boko Haram, which has been waging a deadly insurgency in northern Nigeria since 2009.

Army Troops Kill Nine Boko Haram Terrorists In Borno Raid

The Nigerian Army, 7 Division, Friday, said its troops killed nine suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Rimanti Alagarno villages of Damboa local government area of Borno state.
The suspected terrorists were killed when the troops of the Division launched an attack on their hideouts/camps near the Sambisa Forests.
Confirming the killing of the terror suspects, the army in a statement signed by its spokesman, Lt. Col Muhammad Dole said, “In a midnight encounter with the Boko Haram terrorists, the Nigerian Army, 7 Division killed nine Boko Haram terrorists, while others fled with various degree of injuries along Rimanti-Alagarno road in Damboa local government area of Borno state on Thursday 14th November 2013″.
According to the statement, during the encounter large arms and ammunitions were recovered with the destruction of 2 pick up vehicles belonging to the terrorists, while a pick up vehicle and 3 motorcycles were equally recovered by the troops

FG Approves N7.3bn For Reconstruction Of Akure-Ilesha Highway

The Federal Government has awarded a N7.39-billion contract for the rehabilitation of the 66-kilometre Akure-Ilesha highway.

The Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, disclosed this in Akure on Friday when he inaugurated the project.
The minister, who was represented by Mr Oluyemi Oguntominiyi, the Director of Highways (South-West), Federal Ministry of Works, said that the project would be completed within 21 months.
Onolememen emphasised the government’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations toward the infrastructural development of the country.
“Government is investing on this road to provide relief to the people and promote economic activities among communities and neighbouring states,’’ he said.

The minister urged the contractor, Kopek Construction Limited, to adhere strictly to the terms of the contract.
Earlier, Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun and Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State pledged to support efforts to develop the infrastructure of their states.
Mr Issam Feghali, the Managing Director of Kopek Construction Limited, assured the Federal Government that the project would be completed within the stipulated time.
“We assure you of quality work, in accordance with the specifications in the bill of quantity; we hope to complete the work before the 21 months timeframe,” he said.
The road reconstruction project starts from the Oke Ijebu Street intersection in Akure, Ondo State, and terminates at the Iloko-Ijesa junction in Ilesa, Osun. [NAN]

Anambra: APC Accuses Police Of Acting Out PDP Script With Arrest Of ‘Election Monitors’ From Osun

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Imo State police command of “acting out the script of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra by arresting election monitors from Osun State and labelling them as thugs”.

APC in a statement signed by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in Lagos on Friday, said the report that a “crack team” of the police in Imo State had arrested 180 “armed hoodlums carrying fake voters cards, official identity cards of INEC and Independent Observer identity cards” was “nothing but tales by the moonlight”.
Mohammed said, “Those who were arrested by the increasingly partisan police are election monitors from Osun, who are members of the Justice and Equality Organisation, an INEC-accredited election monitoring NGO. With INEC having trained key officials of the accredited election monitoring NGOs, those trained are now training their members in readiness for the election. Those trained by INEC are in Owerri.
“Those whom the police have labelled as thugs are members of the Justice and Equality Organisation. They are in Owerri for training ahead of the election. They chose Owerri because of its proximity to Anambra and its affordable hotel costs.

“None of them is a member of the APC, despite the insinuation by the police, and none is armed, because you don’t need guns to monitor elections. Any weapon exhibited by the police must have been procured by them to justify their gaffe.
“The only offence that the arrested election monitors have committed, in the eyes of the police, is that they are from a staunchly APC state with zero tolerance for the do-nothing, bumbling PDP”.

Jobless Husband Flees As Wife Gives Birth To Triplets In Enugu

The joy of Mrs. Ifeoma Odo of Ebo Umuabor in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, could turn to tears after her husband absconded on hearing that she was in labour for triplets.

Odo told the News Agency of Nigeria in Nsukka on Friday that her husband, Mr. John-Patrick Odo, disappeared when he realised she would give birth to triplets.
“It’s been seven days since I put to bed, yet I have not seen my husband. Several attempts to reach him through his telephone have failed as he switched off his mobile phone.
“I know he has no job but that should not be the reason for him to abandon me and the babies,” she said of her husband of three years.
Odo appealed to the government and good spirited individuals to come to the aid of the triplets, saying they required a lot of care to survive having been born pre-term.
“I will be very grateful to all who offer financial help to me and my babies at this difficult moment,” she said.

Over 600,000 Displaced In Typhoon-ravaged Philippines

The Philippine government has defended its efforts to deliver assistance to victims of Typhoon Haiyan, many of whom have received little or no assistance since the storm struck one week ago.
The response comes as government officials give conflicting estimates of the death toll, which is expected to rise further when the missing are declared dead and remote regions reached.
At least 600,000 people have been displaced, with authorities struggling to meet their immediate needs.
“In a situation like this, nothing is fast enough,” Mar Roxas, Philippine interior secretary, said on Friday in Tacloban city, most of which was destroyed by the storm one week ago.

“The need is massive, the need is immediate, and you can’t reach everyone.”
Given the scale of the disaster, and infrastructure and communications problems, the conflicting figures are not unusual.
The spokesman for the country’s civil defence agency, Major Reynaldo Balido, confirmed early on Friday that the toll had risen to 2,360, hours after the UN issued conflicting reports on how many people had died.
On the ground in Tacloban, authorities handed out a situation report stating that 3,422 people had been killed on Samar and Leyte islands, the two most affected areas.

Stella Oduah To Appear Before Senate Today

The Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, is scheduled to appear before the senate on Thursday (today) to brief the upper legislative chamber about the state of the aviation industry, particularly the unfortunate crash involving the Associated Airlines flight on October 3.

Oduah was scheduled to appear before the senators last week Thursday but was shifted because  Senate President David Mark was not available and he had requested to personally preside over the probe session.
It will be recalled that Oduah could not also appear before the Senate last week Wednesday during plenary because she had sought a last minute permission from the Senators to attend the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.
Oduah had been summoned by the upper legislative chamber to explain her roles in the ill-fated plane that crashed while conveying the remains of former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu, from Lagos to Akure.

Our correspondent learnt on Wednesday that the senators might restrict their questions to the general state of the aviation industry and how to avoid future plane crashes.
A source in the Senate Committee on Aviation told our correspondent that since the House of Representatives were already probing the minister on the controversial purchase of the N255m bullet proof cars, asking questions on the same issue would not make much sense.
“Since a senate committee is already doing investigation on the bullet proof cars allegedly bought for Oduah,  I think the senate will only concentrate on the frequent air crashes and what was being done to curtail its reoccurrence,” the source said.
Oduah has been on the firing line of public rage since it was revealed that the cash-strapped National Civil Aviation Authority was forced to buy two BMW armoured cars for the minister at a whooping cost of N255m.
