Ebola: Nigeria Withdraw Athletes from Youth Olympic Games

Ebola: Nigeria Withdraw Athletes from Youth Olympic Games

Nigeria “have resolved to pull out from the Youth Olympics” in China following the discriminatory treatment to her athletes.
Nigeria have pulled out of the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, after Team Nigeria’s athletes were quarantined, isolated and barred from getting access to training along with other athletes of the world since arriving at the games village.
Games officials have yet to react to the country’s withdrawal, meanwhile, the discrimination and subsequent quarantine of the athletes is believed to be connected to the Ebola virus outbreak in some part of West Africa.
The decision to withdraw Nigeria’s contingent from the Games was taken after a meeting with Sports Minister, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) president, Engr. Sani Ndanusa and the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye.

Nanjing 2014: Nigeria Pulls Its Athletes from Youth Olympic Games Following Ebola Discrimination.
In a statement on Wednesday the NSC chief, Elegbeleye, protested against the inhumane treatment meted out to the Nigerian athletes, which he termed as “discriminatory”. The athletes and the officials have been directed to leave China and head back home.
The 2014 Youth Olympics is scheduled to hold between August 16 and 18.
Team Nigeria registered twelve athletes slated to participate in three sports: Athletics, Wrestling and Beach Volleyball.
The first edition of the Games- officially known as Summer Youth Games- was held in Singapore in 2010.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) established the Youth Games in July 2007, with the aim of helping to discover fledgling talents for grooming and further development for prospective Olympic Games.

EBOLA: Salt Water Kills Three In Bauchi State

EBOLA: Salt Water Kills Three In Bauchi State

At least three people have been reported to have died, while a pregnant woman also landed in hospital, as a result of excessive intake of salt for the prevention of Ebola Virus in Bauchi State.
According to Vanguard report, an old man in Misau local council and three other adults in Bigi , Gudum Sayawa, and Bayara village, suburbs in Bauchi, northern Nigeria, were the victims of the salt intake exercise.

An unnamed source was quoted to have said that one of the deceased, Mr. Paul Bigi, 74, drank more than two cups of salted water and also rub some on his body after bathing with the salt water as advised by his children.
“Less than one hour after he took the salt water, Baba started deficating non-stop and he died in the morning around 7am,” the source said.
Also in Gumdum Sayawa, it was gathered that one John Ayuba made use of one bag of salt in one drum of water for bathing and one bag of salt in another drum of water for drinking due to large number of people living in his house.
A family source informed that Ayuba died of diarrhea and vomiting moments later.
Meanwhile, a health worker who did not want his name published, at the Bayara Specialist Hospital informed that a hypertensive patient drank three glasses of water filled with salt.
He said: “A hypertensive patient who drank three classes of salt water was brought by his relatives to our hospital. He did not survive the crisis as his blood level has exceeded the normal range”
In Gudum Sayawa, a pregnant woman, Mrs. Hanatu Kushi, was said to have a miscarriage after taking salt solution.
Mrs Kushi is said to be currently being treated at a private hospital in the area.
When contacted, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Sani Malami, denied reports of outbreak of Ebola in the state, saying the rumour was to create unnecessary panic.
He advised the citizens of the state to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of severe fever to the nearest health facility, assuring that adequate measures have been put in place to treat infected persons.

The Ebola virus is believed to have killed no fewer than three people in Lagos since its outbreak in Nigeria in July via Liberian man, Patrick Sawyer.
According to Nigerian Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, 11 people have been confirmed to have contracted the deadly disease while more than hundred of others are being monitored for symptoms of the Ebola virus.
The World Health Organisation, WHO, says at least 1069 people have died of the virus since February this year.
Nigerians and citizens of Guinea, Sierre Leone and Liberia have been advised to wash their hands regularly and avoid contact with animals like monkey, bats, antelopes e.t.c to avoid contracting the Ebola virus.

Imo 2015: Ararume Sets Campaign Ball Rolling, Appoints Ogunewe Campaign Director

Ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries in Imo State, one of the major contestants, Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, has appointed Hon. Independence Ogunewe as his campaign director.
Ararume also appointed a former senatorial candidate and businessman, Chief Okey Ikoro, as the deputy director general, to ensure his victory at the 2015 general election.
Ararume, in a statement signed by his political adviser, Mr Chinedu Nwogwugwu and made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday, said the appointment of Mr. Ogunewe had sent shock waves down the spine of other aspirants from Mbaise clan, which comprises three local governments.

Ebola Death: Sierra Leone Records Second Doctor Victim

Another Sierra Leonean doctor has died after contracting the deadly Ebola virus, health officials have noted.
Dr Modupeh John Eric Cole, a senior physician at the Connaught Hospital in Freetown, was diagnosed with Ebola last Friday and was taken to the specialist Kailahun Treatment Centre the following day.
“We are all very, very saddened,” said Dr. Brima Kargbo, the country’s chief medical officer, while confirming the doctor’s death.
Dr Cole was a “very powerful presence in the country’s medical team and has been very instrumental in the fight against the Ebola virus.”
Cole’s death came about two weeks after Sierra Leone’s leading anti-Ebola expert, Dr Umar Khan, also died from the virus.

Ebola: Obama Orders US Diplomats Families Out Of Sierra Leone

The United States on Thursday told the families of its diplomats in Sierra Leone to leave the country to avoid exposure to the epidemic of deadly Ebola fever ravaging the country.
“The embassy recommended this step out of an abundance of caution,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said, citing “a lack of options for routine health care services at major medical facilities due to the Ebola outbreak.”
783 cases of infection with the virus have been confirmed in Sierra Leone, 334 of which have died.

Ebola Drug Made By Nigerian To Benefit 8 Infected Persons

Ebola Drug Made By Nigerian To Benefit 8 Infected Persons

Eight out of the Nigerians infected with the deadly Ebola disease will benefit from an experimental treatment in Lagos, Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu has announced.
Chukwu, who made the announcement, today at a world press conference in Abuja, said a Nigerian scientist has offered Nigeria the drug, ‘NanoSilver’, for testing on those infected with the virus, following the approval by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that experimental treatments are ethical in the case of a pandemic.
“A Nigerian scientist has offered Nigeria an experimental drug, hopefully today, that will reach the treatment centre,” Chukwu said.
Although the health minister declined mentioning the name of the scientist, he assured that the health ministry will ensure that the drug is applied in line with international best practice.
The US had earlier sent experimental drug ZMapp to Liberia after President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf requested for the drug. Canada has also promised to donated 1,000 vaccines to the affected countries.
Speaking further, the minister dismissed reports that Eboa has entered Enugu. He said no case of the disease was confirmed in the eastern state.
“A nurse who treated the late Patrick Sawyer disobeyed the Incident Management Committee and traveled to Enugu to visit her husband and was later identified with the symptom. But no one has been infected with the virus in the state apart from Lagos.
“As at today’s morning, we have only six contacts in Enugu who are under surveillance.”
