Demi Lovato's 'Take Me To Church' Cover Will Give You Goosebumps

Demi Lovato's 'Take Me To Church' Cover Will Give You Goosebumps

We've always known Demi Lovato had serious pipes, but after hearing her latest cover, we're fully-converted Lovatics.
The singer performed a beautifully haunting cover of Hozier's "Take Me To Church" at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge on Wednesday. With the help of her pared-down band and two backup singers, Lovato made the track her own and gave us major goosebumps in the process.
Lovato told Live Lounge's Clara Amfo, "It's not your typical pop song ... I think I even tweeted, 'Thank God somebody put this on the radio because this is incredible music.'"
To check out the whole performance, just watch the video below. Also, listen to her sing a subdued version of her hit "Cool for the Summer."

With No Other Choice, This Student Resorted to Prostitution to Meet NYU's Soaring Price

With No Other Choice, This Student Resorted to Prostitution to Meet NYU's Soaring Price

MANDY
Last Tuesday, September 1 -- the day before classes started at New York University -- there was an extraordinary rally in Washington Square Park to protest Wall Street's stranglehold on U.S. higher education.
In several ways, this rally was unprecedented. First, it was a massing of communities not only from one threatened university, but several institutions starkly misdirected by their buccaneering boards and pampered managers: NYU, Cooper Union and the New School, three downtown New York City schools severely damaged by their trustees' serial construction plans and other wild investments.
From those three schools, moreover, there were groups that represented all who've been screwed over by the neoliberal seizure of our universities: students -- both undergraduate and graduate -- increasingly ripped off, and crushed by debt; the ever-growing army of untenured faculty, earning fast food pay to do the lion's share of teaching; the tenured faculty, squeezed out of governance, and making ever less (while topmost bureaucrats make more and more); and all those staff who struggle in the trenches every day to keep their institutions functioning, despite the serial slashing of their ranks and budgets.
And while unprecedented in its academic reach, including all essential groups within the university, this rally was unprecedented also in its reach beyond the university, to all those living in the shadows of those three metastasizing campuses -- and countless other towers now lunging skyward citywide. Along with many Greenwich Village neighbors who were in the park that day, there were activists from neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Chinatown, TriBeCa, Chelsea and the Lower East Side, joining to protest those huge construction projects financed, in particular, by
student debt.
Although NYU is a notoriously grasping "not-for-profit" university -- infamous for its eye-popping prices, slim financial aid, and the inordinate debt burden of its graduates, as well as for its bulging real estate portfolio, rampant global 'growth' à la McDonald's, lavish 'compensation' (including summer mansions) for its top executives, and cozy unions with authoritarian regimes -- its sordid reputation shouldn't blind us to the fact that NYU is not essentially unlike most other U.S. universities today, but different from them only in degree.
University professors nationwide are well aware of this relationship. This is why our rally won strong statements of support from campuses beyond downtown Manhattan -- another first, with faculty at several public universities condemning the corruption of three private schools. Thus, along with certain stellar individuals who teach at Yale, Columbia, Johns Hopkins and the University of Chicago, those joining us included the faculty unions at Rutgers, the University of Illinois/Chicago, and the University of Wisconsin (now in the cross-hairs of Scott Walker).
Wherever they may teach, the faculty who stood with us last week, in person or in spirit, all recognize that NYU now represents the avant garde of everything that's wrong with U.S. higher education; and that this trend must be opposed, and then reversed, by those of us who know enough to educate our students, and care enough about them to protect them from a system that is eating them alive.
There was a moment at the rally when the nature of that beast was suddenly, and unforgettably, revealed; when "Mandy," an anonymous NYU junior, took the stage (face hidden by a mask from Eyes Wide Shut) to tell exactly how, and why, she had no choice but to become a prostitute to meet NYU's soaring price.
Her story -- of a shattering ordeal that's more widespread at NYU than any other school in the United States (as several media outlets have reported) -- left many standing there in tears. It is below in her own words.
***
Good Afternoon, and thank you for attending today's rally.
I would tell you my name, but if I did, I would have to ask which one you wanted.
Are you asking for Alex, the name I had while working in a dominatrix den in Midtown?
Or are you asking for Johanna, the name they gave me while I was a body-rub girl in an Upper East Side Tantra House?
Maybe it's better if I just stay nameless.
There are students here who work two, sometimes three jobs just to get by. There are students here who sleep in the lower levels of Bobst because they have nowhere else to go. And there are those of us, like myself, who have turned to Backpages, Craigslist, and Seeking Arrangement because we felt we were running out of options.
Before I became a prostitute, I was an accomplished student. I had perfect grades. At the end of my first semester at NYU, I had been used as a poster child by the university. I had been asked to attend several events with John Sexton, encouraging alumni to donate to one fund or another. When my only parent was injured and therefore unable to work, my professors rallied behind me and wrote to the administration on my behalf, asking for support. They were ignored.
I managed to keep my situation stable for a year, but this winter things became so bad I found myself homeless, and later, jobless. It took everything I had to pay NYU's fees for the next semester and to settle into a new place. As a first generation college student, I was determined not to let my circumstances prevent me from continuing my education. I didn't care what the cost was.
I explained my situation to the professors and counselors here at NYU. My grades suffered from all the time I had to devote to my new jobs. I missed classes so I could cover shifts. My essays were almost always late. I was losing my grip, exhausted after days that started at seven and ended in the early hours of the morning.
There wasn't much left to do. My counselors were kind but could offer no help. Despite my past academic performance, my contributions to the university, and overwhelming support from the faculty, the school would decidedly do nothing to help me.
So I did my best to find jobs that could support me while I finished my degree, though nothing could pay for both school and rent. I became desperate. I started responding to ads on Craigslist promising hourly payments from $80 to $110. I tried to transfer, but no university I applied to - whether they be public or private - would take NYU's credits. I couldn't just take time off or leave, since I would still have to pay for $20,000 worth of loans. I had exhausted all other resources. I thought if I wanted to finish school, there was nothing else I could do.
By the time I started working as a dominatrix, I had less than two weeks to make rent. I made the money in two days.
I was doing well, but I couldn't stay at the den. Friends and strangers alike asked too many questions about what I was doing, why there were bruises on my arms and legs. I started to work at a Tantra House instead, where they charged higher fees, had less competition, and wouldn't leave marks on my body. The men who visited me there were typically over thirty, married, and involved in business. They were strangely unafraid to talk about themselves and their personal lives. Perhaps they thought I was trustworthy, or maybe they thought I would be too afraid to talk about what I knew, lest I admit to the things I was doing.
But I'm not afraid, at least not anymore. I learned at the dominatrix den and at the Tantra House, almost every single girl who worked there was a student struggling to pay for school or to pay off her crippling student loans. Some were Sarah Lawrence girls, some went to CUNY or Cooper Union, but the vast majority go to or went to NYU.
My story is a common one, and that is why I need to tell it. Student prostitution is not a rarity - an outlier to be dismissed. Many of you know someone who has worked as a dominatrix, a masseuse, a stripper, or as an escort. If you don't, you know someone who does. It is an epidemic. We came to these universities to better ourselves, to work for a better life. No girl should have to sell herself to make that better life a reality.
I did it because I believed I had earned my place here. I did it because I refused to believe that my family's socio-economic status should prevent me from getting the best education I could. I did it because I believed that if I worked hard enough, I could make it through. And I did it because I thought in the end, maybe one day, I could forget.
I was one of the lucky ones. At the start of the summer, I had made enough money to walk away from sex work, at least for a few months. Now school is starting again and the process of looking for a well-paid part-time job starts all over. I am lucky. I am out. But I'm afraid that if things don't go well, I might have to go back.
To some members of the administration of NYU, I am another one of the faceless, nameless students paying for their summer homes and expansion projects, unaware that the money they've taken from me and countless other girls has been earned from prostitution.
To the other members of the administration, I'm Alex. Or maybe some call me Johanna.

It's Going To Take A Lot To Make America Great Again

It's Going To Take A Lot To Make America Great Again

“Shared prosperity is not around the corner.”
That’s the conclusion of a new study out by Harvard Business School that surveyed a wide swath of alumni. Entrepreneurship in America is in particular trouble.
The study says there are structural problems with the American economy, meaning that the economy’s issues aren’t just remnants of the Great Recession, but are underlying, ongoing issues that existed before the recession.
One of these structural issues is that “starting a business may have become less a path to the middle class and more a way that the advantaged become more prosperous.” In other words, if you went to Harvard Business School, you’ll probably be fine. Otherwise, things aren’t looking great.
This is how HBS graduates see the American business climate in 2015. They like the opportunities for entrepreneurship and dislike the tax code.
But the report is not so much about how HBS grads think business is great -- it instead goes out of its way to point out that its results don’t line up with the more general data available on small businesses in the U.S. The authors think it might be because, well, they asked Harvard alumni:
Perhaps entrepreneurship in America has become more accessible for educated, well-connected individuals such as HBS alumni but less accessible to the population as a whole. Declines in household wealth and home equity might have taken away the assets that many individuals used in the past to finance new businesses, and rising student debt might deter those individuals from taking on the risk of a startup. If so, then starting or buying a business may become less a pathway to a middle-class life and more a way that the advantaged become more prosperous. Entrepreneurship might become a source of prosperity but not shared prosperity in the United States.

It’s harder for the average person to get access to the lump of cash that’s often necessary to start a business. The venture capital industry is booming, but it's looking to contribute money to startups looking to take over the world, like Uber, not the more quotidian kind, like a local auto dealership.
As a result, many survey respondents think income inequality is going to continue to be exacerbated. And they see this as a problem as much for businesses of the future as it is for the wage earners of the future.
Rising inequality — respondents explained in open-ended replies — reduces demand for the products of companies that cater to the working- and middle-class, creates a backlash against successful companies, undermines social stability, and makes it hard for individuals to invest in skills that companies need.

A full 71 percent of respondents think that some sort of negative economic outcome, be it rising inequality or higher poverty or lower social mobility, is a business problem.

Ebola Death: Sierra Leone Records Second Doctor Victim

Ebola Death: Sierra Leone Records Second Doctor Victim

Another Sierra Leonean doctor has died after contracting the deadly Ebola virus, health officials have noted.
Dr Modupeh John Eric Cole, a senior physician at the Connaught Hospital in Freetown, was diagnosed with Ebola last Friday and was taken to the specialist Kailahun Treatment Centre the following day.
“We are all very, very saddened,” said Dr. Brima Kargbo, the country’s chief medical officer, while confirming the doctor’s death.
Dr Cole was a “very powerful presence in the country’s medical team and has been very instrumental in the fight against the Ebola virus.”
Cole’s death came about two weeks after Sierra Leone’s leading anti-Ebola expert, Dr Umar Khan, also died from the virus.

Ebola: Obama Orders US Diplomats Families Out Of Sierra Leone

The United States on Thursday told the families of its diplomats in Sierra Leone to leave the country to avoid exposure to the epidemic of deadly Ebola fever ravaging the country.
“The embassy recommended this step out of an abundance of caution,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said, citing “a lack of options for routine health care services at major medical facilities due to the Ebola outbreak.”
783 cases of infection with the virus have been confirmed in Sierra Leone, 334 of which have died.

Chibok: France Offers To Send Agents For Rescue Operation

France on Wednesday offered to send security service agents to Nigeria to help recover more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by the Boko Haram sect, Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius, said.
With more than 4,000 troops operating between Mali to the west and Central African Republic to the east, Paris has a major interest in preventing Nigeria’s security situation from deteriorating, having previously voiced concerns Boko Haram could spread further north into the Sahel.

“The President has instructed … to put the (intelligence) services at the disposal of Nigeria and neighbouring countries,” Reuters quoted Fabius as saying to lawmakers.

“This morning he asked us to contact the Nigerian president to tell him that a specialised unit with all the means we have in the region was at the disposal of Nigeria to help find and recover these young girls.” Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls last month and has threatened to sell them into slavery.

“In the face of such ignominy France must react. This crime cannot be left unpunished,” Fabius said.

Motivational blogger Karyn Washington commits suicide, aged 22

Motivational blogger Karyn Washington commits suicide, aged 22

Karyn Washington, the young beautiful lady who founded the blog For Brown Girls has committed suicide. Karyn killed herself at her home on April 8th. She was just 22.

Her friends say the popular blogger, who founded the blog three years ago to 'celebrate the beauty of dark skin while combatting colorism and promoting self love', suffered from depression and mental illness for many months before taking her life. Friends say the depression started after she lost her mum to cancer in 2013.

Karyn, who motivated thousands everyday through her blog, never shared her problems with her fans and readers, who were most shocked when news of her death hit headlines. Continue...

Blogger Ty Alexander wrote on his blog
"I wanna pout for a few minutes. I wanna bubble-snot cry. I wish someone had told Karyn Washington that she didn’t have to be strong. She didn’t have to hold the world’s glaring eyes on her shoulders. That asking for help was ok. No matter how you ask for it, it’s ok. People say all the time, You’re so strong! That’s so far from the truth. I AM WEAK!!! I think that’s what has gotten me through. I don’t judge myself for bursting into tears in the middle of a meeting. I don’t judge myself for eating the entire pint of butter pecan ice cream (although I just signed up for Crunch)! And I cannot judge myself for not being able to save Karyn."
Karyn spread words of hope to thousands of women everyday. Messages such as this one, which she shared last year while watching her mother deteriorate from cancer:
"I am empowered by other strong women and girls. Even by those who don’t necessarily know they are inspiring. Women who are doing what they can to uplift others around them and make a difference in their community motivate me to do the same. I think it is so important for women no matter what complexion, race, or religious background to be united in making sure our voices are heard — that we are being leaders and positive role models to the younger generation."
May her soul rest in peace, Amen.

NEW REVELATION: Co-pilot of missing plane tried to make call from his phone after plane vanished but ‘was abruptly cut off’

NEW REVELATION: Co-pilot of missing plane tried to make call from his phone after plane vanished but ‘was abruptly cut off’

The Malaysian plane has not been found 35 days after it went missing and according to new reports, the co-pilot of the missing flight tried to make a desperate call from his mobile phone after the aircraft went missing but was abruptly cut off…
UK Daily Mail reports
Investigators have learned the call was made from a mobile phone which belonged to Fariq Abdul Hamid (left) as the Boeing 777 flew low near the island of Penang, on the north of Malaysia’s west coast. It was understood the aircraft, with 239 people on board, was flying low enough for the nearest telecommunications tower to pick up Fariq’s signal. The call ended abruptly. However, contact was definitely established with a telecommunications sub-station in Penang state. Experts have said it is possible for a mobile phone to be connected to a telecommunications tower at an altitude of 7,000 feet – which is low for a large jet like the Boeing 777 unless it was flying at high speed to maintain height. Yesterday it looked like the black box may had been located deep in the Indian Ocean.

SAD NEWS: Wrestling Legend, Ultimate Warrior Is Dead, SEE His Age

SAD NEWS: Wrestling Legend, Ultimate Warrior Is Dead, SEE His Age

Days after his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame and a return to the company after an 18-year breakup, Wrestling legend, The Ultimate Warrior is dead.
Capture
According to a statement posted on the WWE website, the late wrestling superstar was 54.
The news, posted late Tuesday night, led to a flood of tributes from fans and WWE performers and officials and comes on the day the WWE released a DVD in Warrior’s honor.
In the statement, the company said, “WWE is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of the most iconic WWE superstars ever, The Ultimate Warrior.
“We are grateful just days ago, Warrior had the opportunity to take his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame and was able to appear at WrestleMania 30 and Monday Night Raw to address his legions of fans. WWE sends its sincere condolences to Warrior’s family, friends and fans.”
Warrior was known for his energetic style, sprinting down the aisle to the ring; violent shaking of the ropes to psych himself up; and unique interview style that often left fans unsure of his message.
Warrior was born James Hellwig, but legally changed his name to Warrior in 1993. He is survived by his wife Dana and daughters Indiana and Mattigan, who had accompanied him to the podium at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony Saturday night in New Orleans.
In his final public appearance Monday night, Warrior donned the long jacket with his image airbrushed on the back, similar to what he wore during his wrestling days, and put on a mask that looked like his trademark face paint. It was his first appearance on Raw since 1996.
“No WWE talent becomes a legend on their own,” he told the crowd. “Every man’s heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe their final breath. And if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them believe deeper in something that’s larger than life, then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized by the storytellers — by the loyalty, by the memory of those who honor him, and make the running the man did live forever.
“I am the Ultimate Warrior, you are the Ultimate Warrior fans and the spirit of the Ultimate Warrior will run forever.”
Warrior began his wrestling career as part of a group of bodybuilders-turned-wrestlers in Southern California. His early career was marked by his work in a tag team known as the Blade Runners with Steve Borden, who would later become Sting. Warrior was known as Blade Runner Rock and Borden as Blade Runner Flash.
His use of the Warrior name came in the Texas-based World Class Championship Wrestling where he worked as the Dingo Warrior and was billed as being from Queens, N.Y.
Warrior came to the then-WWF in 1987 and was re-branded as The Ultimate Warrior. He won his first Intercontinental title from the Honky Tonk Man in a match that lasted less than a minute at the first Summer Slam in 1988. He would lose the title to Ravishing Rick Rude and then regain it at Sumer Slam in 1989.
He was still the champion leading into the main event match at WrestleMania in Toronto in 1990, which might be the highlight of his career. The bout against Hulk Hogan was for Hogan’s WWF title and Warrior’s Intercontinental title.
Warrior won the match and was embraced and presented with the WWE title belt by Hogan afterward, in a passing of the torch from the biggest star of the 1980s to one of the biggest stars of the 1990s.
“We are all so sad that the Ultimate Warrior has passed away,” WWE chairman Vince McMahon tweeted.
Nigerian reality show star and musician, Timi Dakolo also tweeted: “RIP Ultimate Warrior, my favourite wrestler.I remember wrestling Mania VI when you defeated Hulk Hogan. One of my joyous moments.”
Warrior would leave the WWE twice and then return before an ill-fated and brief stint in World Championship Wrestling in the late 1990s.
After retirement, he worked as a motivational speaker.

North Korea Arrests Christian Missionary

North Korea Arrests Christian Missionary

North Korea has arrested a 75-year-old Australian man working as a Christian missionary in Pyongyang, according to his family.
The family said in a press release that John Short was on his second trip to North Korea and was in possession of religious materials that had been translated into Korean.
He is the second Christian missionary being held by the North, the other is Kenneth Bae, a South Korean with US citizenship.
Karen Short, John’s wife, told Reuters news agency on Wednesday: “It’s a bit traumatic, it’s been 48 hours and my husband is still there. I’m not upset, we’re Christian missionaries and we have tremendous support for what we do.”
The family’s press release also reported the tour company as saying that North Korean officials had refused to take their calls. Pyongyang has not confirmed Short’s detention.
The Australian government, which does not have diplomatic relations with North Korea, is using its consulate in Seoul and the Swedish embassy in Pyongyang to handle the case.
“We are in close contact with Swedish officials in Pyongyang to seek their assistance in confirming the well-being of Mr. Short and to obtain more information,” said an Australian embassy spokesman in Seoul, explaining that its capacity to deliver consular services in Pyongyang was “extremely limited”.
Karen Short said that on his first trip to North Korea, her husband had been transparent about his faith and had openly read his bible in front of North Korean government guides when in Pyongyang.
“He’s courageous, this is my husband’s character,” said Short. “I hope things get better — he’s in God’s hands, we both totally believe that. He won’t be intimidated by the communists.” [AlJazeera]

World Bank To Support Lagos Eko secondary schools Project With $42M

World Bank To Support Lagos Eko secondary schools Project With $42M

The World Bank has pledged to support the Lagos Eko Secondary Schools project with 42 million dollars to enhance the education sector in the state.
The World Bank’s pledged was contained in a statement issued in Abuja.
It said that the new fund already approved by the bank’s board was an additional amount to the existing loans to the state.
“The new IDA credit of over 42 million dollars to the Lagos EKO Secondary School Project is an addition to an original credit of 95 million dollars.
“This systematically benefited over 620,000 students a year in 667 public secondary schools in Lagos State between 2009 and 2013.
“It will allow strong results to be sustained and evaluated in hundreds of secondary schools and expand others,” it said.
The World Bank said that the grant had also helped to increase the number of poor children accessing quality secondary education.
It also added that it helped technical college graduates from low-income backgrounds to find well-paying jobs.
The World Bank said that the grant had further helped students to improve dramatically in Basic Education Certification Examination.
“Student scores from beneficiary schools went up from 30 per cent to 70 per cent in English, 31 per cent to 45 per cent in Mathematics and 27 per cent to 65 per cent in Basic Sciences.
It said the results of the June 2013 West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate external examinations showed that 41 per cent of students from beneficiary schools passed with five credits and above compared with over 18 per cent before the project.
Commenting on the development, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly, said the grant would provided children from poor homes opportunity to access quality education
“When students from poor families have the opportunity to go to secondary school and acquire sound knowledge and skills, they stand a fair chance of getting a good job or accessing economic opportunities later in life.
“This contributes to eliminating extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity in furtherance of the World Bank’s two main goals,” she said.
She added that with the new financing, the project would now extend school development grants to the original beneficiary schools until 2015.
She said the bank would track the performance of beneficiary students in public examinations and continue professional development activities for teachers and school management.
Mr Olatunde Adekola, the World Bank Task Team Leader for the project, said the project was critical in the development of the education sector and creating opportunities for children of the poor to access quality education.
“The Lagos EKO project has built a critical pathway for students from low-income background to gain access to good-quality secondary education, showing that where there is a will, there is a way.”  [NAN]

Teacher SELLOTAPED Mouths of 10-year-olds To Keep Them Quiet

Teacher SELLOTAPED Mouths of 10-year-olds To Keep Them Quiet

A primary teacher who allegedly put sticky tape over the mouths of her pupils has been suspended.
Furious parents claimed art and Spanish teacher Priscila Davo dished out the shock punishment because the 10 and eleven-year-olds in her class were noisy.
Mum Stacey Bradbury, 28, claimed her son Thomas, 10, was one a number of pupils targeted.
She claimed: “Some of the boys ended up with quite a lot of Sellotape over their mouths.
“At the end of the lesson they were allowed to take it off but the teacher said this was what was going to happen every time they were noisy.
“My son had the little hairs on his upper lip pulled off by the tape when he took it off. Most people know how painful and horrible that is.
“There are so many other ways to discipline children.”
Thomas added: “Some people had a really bad rash and some girls had their lips bleeding.”
Pupil Ryan Knowles, 11, claimed Ms Davo put seven pieces of tape over his mouth for 25 minutes.
He claimed: “She lined us all up. I was saying to her ‘why are you doing this?’ I’m scared now about going back into her class.
“I don’t know what she might do next.”
Lisa Duffield, 42, claimed her daughter Ella, 11, is refusing to go into class with the teacher again.
She claimed: “It’s disgusting. Ella is quite sensitive. I’ve been told the kids are going to get a full apology from the teacher.
“I hope so.”
Children were sent home from Danesfield Church of England School in Williton, Somerset, with a letter from head Ian Bradbury confirming the suspension and a probe.
The letter said: “We take what has happened to be entirely wrong.”
Mr Bradbury added: “We take all allegations about the wellbeing of children very seriously.”
Teacher Catrin Williams has been suspended for six months pending an investigation into claims she “appeared drunk” to teach a class of children as young as seven at Ysgol yr Esgob Primary School in Caerwys, Flintshire.

Headmistress Called POLICE When Pupils Plotted Not To Smile For School Photo’

Headmistress Called POLICE When Pupils Plotted Not To Smile For School Photo’

A strict headmistress was so angry when she discovered pupils were planning not to smile on a school photo that she called the POLICE – it has been alleged.
Livid Ann Hughes found out some children were planning to ‘spoil’ the picture and telephoned the cops, a professional conduct hearing was told.
It is alleged that an officer was invited into the village primary school in Anglesey, north Wales, to reprimand the pupils unwilling to pose correctly.
Mrs Hughes faces a catalogue of complaints including repeatedly calling one student ‘stupid’ and favouring children whose first language was Welsh.
The committee of the General Teaching Council for Wales heard on Tuesday that she failed to investigate the bullying of two pupils, shouted excessively in the classroom, often used the word ‘crap’, and unnecessarily criticised children’s mistakes.
One pupil at Ysgol Goronwy Owen watched as Mrs Hughes tore his examination paper in front of him when he had spelt his middle name wrong, the hearing as also told.
The school was engulfed in crisis in May 2011 when five of the six teachers simultaneously called in sick after earlier threatening industrial action following a vote of no confidence in Mrs Hughes.
Staff claimed there was a climate of ‘fear’ at the school before the headmistress was suspended in July 2011 and later dismissed.
The case continues.

Israeli Minister calls for third Temple to be built

Minister of Housing and Construction Uri Ariel, a senior member of Israel's government, has once again controversially called for the rebuilding of the Third Temple, on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
The first Temple was destroyed in 586 BCE, the second Temple in 70 CE, and ever since the Jews have been mourning its loss. Now that Israel has once again become a Jewish sovereign state, there have been occasional calls to rebuild the Temple.
The problem, of course, and it's not a small one, is that the site of the Temple is also the third-holiest site in Islam, home to the al-Aqsa mosque (which has stood there since the 8th century CE) and to the Dome of the Rock mosque (probably on the former site of the Temple, though that's debated).
In order to keep the peace, the status quo is that there is no Jewish building allowed on the Temple Mount, and Jews are allowed to come up to visit but not to pray.
Just to be totally clear: despite the rest of this learnboard, there's no mainstream effort to rebuild the Temple at this point in time.

See World’s Most Expensive Honey Costs $6,800 Per Kilogram

See World’s Most Expensive Honey Costs $6,800 Per Kilogram

At 5,000 euros (US $6,800) per kilogram, ‘Elvish’ honey from Turkey is the most expensive in the world. The special honey is extracted from a 1,800-meter deep cave in the Saricayir valley of Artvin city, northeastern Turkey.
According to Gunay Gunduz, a local beekeeper, elvish honey is so expensive because it is naturally produced. The mineral-rich cave enhances the honey’s quality, adding to its value. Gunduz, whose family has been into beekeeping for three generations, first noticed some bees entering the cave back in 2009. That’s when he realized that it might contain honey.
“With the help of professional climbers, we entered the deep bowels of the cave and found 18 kilograms of honey plastered on its spherical walls,” he said. It was later analyzed at a French lab, confirming it to be seven-year-old, high-quality, mineral-rich honey.
The first kilogram of the honey was sold for 45,000 euros at the French stock exchange in 2009. A year later, pharmacists from China bought another kilogram at 28,000 euros. Currently priced at 5,000 euros a kilogram, it is sold in bottles of 170g and 250g. In spite of the smaller portions, Gunduz’s customers aren’t able to ignore the fact that it costs as much as a small car.
Gunduz said that the honey can be used as medicine as well as food. “The honey is produced in a natural way and without hives. The area is rich in endemic and medicinal plants. All this affects the price.” In general, Turkish honey is considered the best in the world, but Gunduz pointed out that plagiarism and artificial honey are ruining the market. “Today, the price of honey cannot be less than 15 euros,” he said.
What would you rather buy – a jar of honey or a car?

Gay Party To Contest Polls In South Africa

Gay Party To Contest Polls In South Africa

A new party that will defend gays and lesbians against violence and persecution will stand in South Africa’s elections this year, its spokesman said Saturday.
“We need a voice in parliament to protect women from being defiled because people want to cure them from being lesbians,” Michael Herbst of the Equal Rights Party told AFP.
“We need someone in parliament when boys are bullied at school because they are thought to be gay,” said the retired professor of health studies at the University of South Africa.
“South Africa has one of the most beautiful constitutions that guarantees the rights of the people who are lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, et cetera. But in reality, it doesn’t work well,” he said.
While homosexuality is widely accepted in mainly white parts of Johannesburg and Cape Town, it remains taboo in many rural areas and in working-class black townships.
While gay marriage has been recognised since 2006, gays and lesbians are regularly killed because of their lifestyle.
Lesbians in the townships are often victims of “corrective r*pe”.
Herbst also said lawmakers for the new party would have a platform for speaking out against violations of gay rights in countries such as Russia, Nigeria and Uganda.
Asked what he thought the party’s chances were in the elections slated for the second half of the year, Herbst said: “We can definitively make it.”
The National Assembly’s 400 seats are awarded proportionally, and the smallest party in the current parliament won fewer than 36,000 votes — some 0.2 percent — in 2009 elections.
