By MADUABUCHI KALU
A member of Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Ejiro Etoroma, who is representing the southern district at the commission, said he is not surprised that the state team to the just-concluded maiden edition of Youth Sports Games held in Abuja won the competition. According to him, he would have been surprised if Team Delta did not win or emerge overall best at the end of the competition.
While speaking with Saturday Sunsports on phone, Mr. Etoroma explained that the states was just reaping the fruit of its labour in sports, having laid solid foundation for sports development. He explained that due to the priority the state attached to sports development, the athletes took their training seriously because they knew that they could be called at any time to represent the state and as a result they trained well.
“Of course, we won the Youth Sports Games in Abuja. I knew that we will win the competition because we invested a lot in sports through planning and the implementation of the plans for sports development.
“I am not surprised that we won. I would have been surprised if we didn’t win the championship because I know the amount of efforts and resources that the state committed to the development of sports. As I speak with you, sports is one of the key sectors of the state government and as a result, priority is always given to it.
“Doing well in sports is not by magic, it takes careful planning and implementation of the plan for you to start getting results like we are doing. What you are seeing or the good showing of Delta athletes did not happen overnight, it takes time and resources.
“In a nutshell, we are just reaping the reward of our efforts and diligent implementation of well laid out plan on sports development. Apart from that, we have good welfare package for our athletes and as a result, they put in their best in whatever they do.”
